Swimming lessons for kids in Watford and Rickmansworth: your options
Leisure centre lessons, independent swim schools or one-to-one at home? A local guide to children's swimming lessons around Watford, Rickmansworth and Croxley.
Waiting lists for children’s swimming lessons can be long, so it’s worth knowing all the local options. There are three main routes.
1. Leisure centre lessons
William Penn Leisure Centre in Mill End and Watford Leisure Centre Central both run Everyone Active’s children’s swimming programme for all abilities. They’re usually the most affordable option and run all year, but popular slots fill quickly.
2. Independent swim schools
- Aqua Swim School has taught in Watford since 1990, at Watford Grammar School for Girls. Beginners start from 3½, there are lessons Monday to Friday from 4:15pm and on Saturday mornings, and it costs £143 for an 11-week term.
- Watford Swim School offers private lessons for babies and children, with weekly term-time lessons and holiday crash courses.
Independent schools tend to have smaller groups and follow school terms.
3. One-to-one lessons at home

Which should you choose?
- Complete beginners under 5: a small-group swim school or parent-and-baby sessions build water confidence fastest.

- Nervous swimmers: one-to-one lessons remove the pressure of a group.
